Customizing the Open menu

Application Wizard gives you full freedom of customizing the Open menu. You can arrange items as you prefer, add frequently used folders, remove unnecessary items and choose how to display the contents of folders.

To customize the Open menu, open the Application Wizard pane in System Preferences, click the Menus tab and click the Configure Open Menu button.

To add a new item to the Open menu, select it in the Items list and click the Add button. Alternatively, you can also quickly drag items from the Items list to the Open Menu list.

To add a frequently used folder to the Open menu, select Folder... in the Items list and click Add or drag it to the Open Menu list, then select the desired folder in the displayed dialog and click Add. Alternatively, you can also quickly drag folders directly from the Finder to the Open Menu list.

To change a folder you have added to the Open menu, select it in the Open Menu list and click the Change button. Select a new folder in the displayed dialog and click Change.

To rearrange items in the Open menu, drag them in the Open Menu list. To change a folder's name in the menu (you might have added more folders with the same name), double-click it in the Open Menu list, type a new name and press Return.

To remove an item from the Open menu, select it in the Open Menu list and click the Remove button or press the Delete key.

When you move or rename a folder you have added to the Open menu, Application Wizard will try to automatically update its path. If the path can't be updated (because you moved the folder to a different volume for instance) the folder will appear in red and display a question mark icon ( ) in the Open Menu list and disappear from the Open menu.

To view an invalid path, turn on the Info button in the dialog and move the mouse pointer over the folder's name in the Open Menu list. To fix the path, select the folder in the Open Menu list and click the Fix Path button. Reselect the folder and click Fix.

Besides allowing you to organize items in the Open menu, Application Wizard lets you decide how folder contents should be displayed and whether menus should be automatically synchronized every time they are shown.

By default, Application Wizard lists the applications contained in each folder displayed in the Open menu in a single non-hierarchical submenu looking two levels deep into the folder. You can increase or decrease the folder's depth using the Folder Depth submenu at the bottom of the submenu.

If you prefer folder submenus being hierarchical:

Hierarchical menu

select the Make folder menus hierarchical checkbox. With hierarchical folder menus you can open any folder in the Applications, Classic Applications and Developer Applications folders or in a other folder you have added to the Open menu by choosing the corresponding item in the menu.

Application Wizard synchronizes folder submenus and the System Preferences submenu every time they are displayed, so that the listed applications and preference panes always match the contents of folders and the panes in System Preferences.

Select the Turn off automatic synchronization checkbox if you want to speed up the display of submenus: Application Wizard will fill them up the first time you show them and then remember them.

When automatic synchronization is turned off, you can manually synchronize a folder submenu (after installing a new application for instance) or the System Preferences submenu by holding the Control key and displaying the submenu.
